We would like to invite everyone to participate in the Asian American Memorial Tribute to Senator Paul Simon scheduled at 11 AM on Sunday, 11/14/04 at the Chicago Culture Center (see attached flyer). The purpose of this event is to honor the legacy of service and commitment that distinguished Senator Simon for the Asian American community. This event including a reception lunch is free to everyone. For more information and RSVP, please call 312-326-5320.
This tribute, which comes nearly one year following Senator Simon's passing, will feature remembrances of many issues and events where Senator Simon demonstrated leadership for Asian Americans including Simon's work to establish the month of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month; his work on immigration including the Hong Kong quota and to save the immigration preference for brothers and sisters; his legislative leadership on the Civil Liberties Act to provide compensation to Japanese Americans for their unjust incarceration during World War II; his leadership in gaining passage of the Hate Crimes Statistics Act, and; his many visits to Asian countries as a member of the Foreign Relation Committee.
